About Blackwood Common
Handmade homewares and boutique cottages, rooted in sustainability.

Thoughtful design and mindful living — brought to life through Blackwood Design and Blackwood Cottages in Tai Tapu.
Born after the Christchurch earthquake, Blackwood Common grew from a love of creativity, craftsmanship, and connection. From our rural studio — shared with our wire-haired dachshunds, Mr. Richard Parker and Miss Vera May — we design, illustrate, and handcraft sustainable homewares that combine beauty, practicality, and care for the planet.
Under Blackwood Design, every pattern begins as a hand-drawn illustration, printed on fabric by Next State in Melbourne, then crafted by hand in Tai Tapu. We also curate a small collection of timeless British brands, including Sophie Allport and Laura Stoddart, to complement our range.
Our Blackwood Cottages offer guests a peaceful retreat that reflects the same values — warmth, sustainability, and attention to detail.
Beyond the studio and cottages, we foster large animals for the S.P.C.A., many of whom now call Blackwood Common home, cared for by my husband, a large-animal veterinarian.
